📱Cell Phone Expectations
To support a focused, positive and safe learning environment, our school has established clear expectations for cell phone use, aligning with the provincial and Burnaby School District policies. We are finding that cell phones can be a source of disruption in the classroom and a safety concern. While students may bring cell phones to school (i.e. if needed for coordination of afterschool activities/care), they must remain turned off or on silent (not vibrate) and stored in students’ backpacks during the school day, including recess and lunch. We kindly ask that parents/caregivers support our efforts for appropriate use by adhering to the following guidelines:
Storing cell phones:
Students who have cell phones may either:
- Keep their phones off or on silent mode (not vibrate) in their backpacks.
Cell phones should not be carried around in pockets or put down on desks, as this increases the risk of the phones being dropped, lost, stolen or used at inappropriate times. - While classroom doors are kept locked at lunch and students are asked to close the door when they leave for lunch, this does not always occur. École Aubrey Elementary is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property. If you are concerned about loss, theft or damage, please do not send a cell phone with your child.
 Using cell phones:
Students are not to use their phones during school hours to make phone calls, send messages, use social media, play games or listen to music. They are not to be used during recess or lunch. Use of cell phones during these times, or times when they don’t have permission, will result in phones being given to the teacher or office for the remainder of the day. Parents/guardians may be asked to pick up phones from the office after school.
If a student has a smart watch and is using it to send or receive messages, or engage in other non-school related activities, they will be asked to turn it off. We noticed a general increase in texting from smart watches last year and hope to reduce these occurrences this school year.
If you need to contact your child, please call the school at 604-296-9001. Please do not send texts or phone their cell phones during school hours. Students needing to contact home, should come to the office and we will gladly call home.
